Alaska Business Permit Lookup: Find State Licenses and Local Requirements

A business operating in Alaska may need more than one approval. Start with the State of Alaska business-license search, then check professional, industry-specific and municipal requirements for the actual activity and location of the business.

Important distinction: an Alaska Business License is not a blanket permit for every activity. A restaurant, contractor, short-term rental, alcohol business, marijuana establishment or other regulated operation may need separate state or municipal approvals before opening.

What Does an Alaska Business Permit Lookup Actually Cover?

There is no single Alaska database containing every permit, license, zoning approval and local registration a business could need. The statewide business-license database maintained by the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing is the best first lookup for the general Alaska Business License.

That state license is only one layer. The type of business, legal structure and physical location determine whether other registrations or permits apply. Alaska municipalities and boroughs can administer their own business licensing, sales-tax registration, zoning, land-use, food-safety, short-term-rental and other local requirements.

STATE BUSINESS LICENSE Search through the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing.
PROFESSIONAL LICENSE Check separately when the activity is a regulated profession or occupation.
LOCAL APPROVALS Contact the municipality or borough where the business actually operates.
INDUSTRY PERMITS Food, alcohol, marijuana and other regulated activities have additional agencies.
Alaska terminology: Alaska uses boroughs, cities and unified municipalities rather than the county-government system found in most states. For a local permit search, identifying the correct city, borough or municipality is essential.
03 / Licensing sequence

Which Alaska Business Registrations Come First?

The state’s published startup sequence separates entity registration, professional licensing and general business licensing. That order matters because an LLC, corporation or other entity may need its Alaska entity number before completing later steps, and a regulated professional activity may need the appropriate professional license.

Common Alaska startup sequence
Stage When it applies Responsible resource
1. Entity registration For corporations, LLCs and other business entities that must register in Alaska. Alaska Corporations Section
2. Professional licensing When the business or owner performs a profession or occupation regulated under Alaska professional-licensing law. Professional Licensing Section
3. Business license Generally required to engage in business in Alaska, subject to statutory exemptions. Business Licensing Section
4. Other permits When the activity or location triggers municipal, state or federal regulation. Applicable local or specialized agency

Does every Alaska business need the same license?

No. Alaska law generally requires a business license for engaging in business in the state, but the Business Licensing Section also identifies statutory exemptions. A possible business-license exemption does not automatically exempt a person or organization from requirements imposed by another agency or regulatory program.

The state also explains that one Alaska Business License can cover multiple lines of business. However, a business using multiple separate DBA or trade names may need more than one license because the state describes the license as covering one business name or DBA.

What information should you gather before applying?

  • Legal owner or registered entity information.
  • Business or DBA name to be used in Alaska.
  • Alaska entity number when an entity registration is required.
  • Applicable professional-license information.
  • Physical and mailing addresses.
  • Primary and additional lines of business and applicable NAICS information.
  • Any required endorsement or specialized registration.
Do not duplicate payments: Alaska’s Business Licensing office advises applicants not to submit duplicate online and paper filings. Online new and renewal filings, when available and successfully completed, post immediately to the state business-license search.
04 / City & borough layer

Local Alaska Business Permits and Registrations

A state business license does not answer every local compliance question. Before signing a commercial lease, opening to customers or starting regulated activity, check the government responsible for the actual business location.

The correct local authority can depend on municipal boundaries. A mailing address associated with a city does not always prove that the physical site lies inside that city’s regulatory jurisdiction.

Anchorage

The Municipality of Anchorage maintains a municipal licensing system and an online lookup that includes business licenses, building permits, planning applications, trade licenses and use permits.

Anchorage’s Municipal Clerk oversees business licensing under applicable municipal code. The exact local license or registration depends on the business activity.

Juneau

The City and Borough of Juneau requires a person, firm or business entity to register with its sales-tax administrator before making sales, rendering services or making rentals within the jurisdiction.

Juneau’s published general sales-tax rate is 5%, with separate additional taxes applying to specified categories such as alcoholic beverages and qualifying room rentals.

Review Juneau business registration →

Sitka

The City and Borough of Sitka requires businesses operating in the jurisdiction to register with the Sales Tax Office. Sitka separately notes that a State of Alaska Business License is also required when applicable.

Special local permits can apply to activities such as taxi and tour operations.

Other Alaska communities

Requirements differ across cities and boroughs. Some local governments focus on sales-tax registration, zoning, land use or industry-specific permits rather than issuing one general local license to every business.

Use the physical location and business activity to identify the correct local government before assuming another Alaska city’s rules apply.

Alaska does not impose a statewide sales tax

The State of Alaska does not levy a statewide sales tax. Municipal governments may levy their own sales or use taxes, and local definitions, exemptions, registration procedures and filing requirements can differ.

If your business operates in a community with a local sales tax, obtain the current registration and filing instructions directly from that municipality. A state business license does not register you automatically for every municipal sales tax.

Local permit checklist

  • Is the business location inside an incorporated city, unified municipality or borough jurisdiction?
  • Does the local government require business or sales-tax registration?
  • Is the proposed use allowed under local zoning rules?
  • Is a building, change-of-use, sign or occupancy approval required?
  • Does the activity involve food, alcohol, marijuana, lodging, transportation or another specially regulated service?
  • Does the municipality maintain a separate public license or permit search?

If your question concerns construction approvals for a business property rather than the business license itself, the permitting authority is separate. For an example of Alaska’s location-specific construction-permit system, see our Alaska deck permit search guide.

05 / Regulated activities

Businesses That May Need Additional Alaska Licenses or Permits

The following examples illustrate why an Alaska Business License lookup should not be treated as a complete compliance search. The applicable regulator depends on what the business actually does.

Examples of additional Alaska licensing and permitting layers
Business activity Additional regulator or permit area What to verify
Regulated profession Alaska Professional Licensing Section Individual, facility or business professional license as applicable.
Restaurant, market, food truck or food processor Alaska DEC Food Safety and Sanitation, or Anchorage’s local food program within Anchorage Permit, plan review, inspection and food-safety requirements.
Alcohol business Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office Applicable alcohol license, endorsements and local review.
Marijuana establishment Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office / Marijuana Control Board License type, supplemental documents, local-government requirements and current status.
Public-facing facility Alaska DEC or applicable local program Public-facility permits for regulated operations such as certain lodging, aquatic, hair or body-art facilities.
Construction or property modification Responsible city, borough, municipality or state authority Building, zoning, fire, electrical, plumbing, land-use or occupancy approvals.

Food establishments

Outside the Municipality of Anchorage’s locally administered food-safety program, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Food Safety and Sanitation Program regulates covered food establishments. DEC provides food-establishment applications, plan-review materials, permit fees and active-permit searches.

For a new food establishment or certain extensive remodels, DEC’s published process requires plan review before construction or operation. The department’s guidance identifies supporting materials such as a food-establishment permit application, plot and floor plans, plumbing information and equipment details for applicable projects.

Alcohol and marijuana businesses

Alcohol and marijuana businesses use separate licensing systems administered through Alaska’s Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office. These licenses are distinct from a general Alaska Business License.

AMCO also publishes dedicated license-search tools. Because AMCO has been transitioning licensing information between systems, its current website advises users to contact staff when a displayed license record needs confirmation.

Alaska Business License Fees and Renewal Rules

The Alaska Business Licensing Forms & Fees page lists the regular state business-license fee at $50 per year. A business can purchase a one-year or two-year license term.

State business licenses expire on December 31 of the one- or two-year period purchased. The state says the renewal period starts October 1 in the year the license expires.

State of Alaska business-license basics
Item Current state guidance Practical note
New business license $50 per year Confirm the term and application details before payment.
Renewal $50 per year Renewal availability depends on the license’s expiration status.
Term One or two years Expiration is December 31 of the purchased period.
Renewal opening October 1 of expiration year Renew early enough to address entity or professional-license problems.
Online filing Posts immediately after successful completion A myAlaska account is required for online payment where online filing is offered.
Fees are generally non-refundable after issuance. Review the business name, ownership, license term and other application details carefully before submitting payment.

Paper processing is slower

The Business Licensing office states that standard hard-copy processing from March through September is generally 10–15 business days. Processing can take longer during the heavy licensing season from October through February.

That published timeframe applies to the state Business Licensing office’s hard-copy workflow. It is not a guaranteed timeline for municipal permits, professional licensing or specialized regulatory approvals.

07 / Troubleshooting

What If an Alaska Business License Is Inactive, Expired or Missing?

An inactive license requires more investigation than simply submitting a new payment. Alaska’s Business Licensing office explains that an inactive status can result from an expired business license or from compliance problems involving the entity or professional licensing when those requirements apply.

If the license expired nine months ago or less

The state says an eligible business license that expired nine months ago or less may generally be renewed online, allowing the renewed license to post to the search system immediately after successful completion.

If it expired more than nine months but less than two years ago

The state directs these renewals to the hard-copy process. Processing time can vary, and the Business Licensing office warns of delays during its busiest renewal season.

If it expired more than two years ago

The state says a new business license must be purchased rather than renewing the old one.

If the license is inactive even though it has not expired

Check related entity and professional-license records. A business that is subject to another regulatory requirement must satisfy the applicable requirements before it is entitled to conduct business under the state business license.

Common license lookup problems
Problem Possible cause Next action
No search result Spelling, DBA variation, different owner name or wrong search field. Try the license number, owner or entity information and alternate business-name spelling.
License shows inactive Expiration or another regulatory compliance issue. Check expiration, entity status and relevant professional license.
Business is operating but no local permit appears Wrong jurisdiction, different permit category or records not available online. Confirm municipal boundaries and contact the responsible local office.
State license exists but regulated activity is unclear General business license is being confused with a professional or industry license. Search the applicable professional or specialized regulatory database.
Old business name appears Ownership, DBA or license-change rules may require a separate filing. Review Alaska’s allowable business-license change procedures before assuming the record can be edited.

09 / Common questions

Alaska Business Permit Lookup FAQs

How do I look up an Alaska business license?

Use the official Alaska Business License Search maintained by the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. You can search by business name, license number and several other identifying fields.

Does Alaska require a state business license?

Alaska’s Business Licensing office states that a business license is generally required for the privilege of engaging in business in the state under AS 43.70.020, subject to limited statutory exemptions. Other regulatory requirements can still apply even when an exemption from the general business license exists.

How much is an Alaska Business License?

The state’s current Business Licensing Forms & Fees page lists the regular fee at $50 per year. One-year and two-year terms are available. Verify the current fee before submitting an application because fees can change.

When does an Alaska Business License expire?

Business licenses expire on December 31 of the one- or two-year period purchased. Alaska says renewal opens October 1 in the year the license expires.

Is an Alaska Business License the same as an LLC registration?

No. Entity registration and business licensing are separate. An LLC, corporation or other qualifying entity generally completes the applicable Corporations Section registration before the Business Licensing step.

Does a professional license replace the Alaska Business License?

Not automatically. The state’s startup guidance treats professional licensing and business licensing as separate steps when both apply. Verify the rules for the profession and ownership structure involved.

Does Alaska have one local business-permit database for every city and borough?

No. Local licensing and permitting systems are maintained by individual municipalities, cities and boroughs. Anchorage, Juneau, Sitka and other communities use their own procedures and databases.

Does Alaska have a statewide sales tax permit?

Alaska does not levy a statewide sales tax. Municipalities may impose local sales or use taxes, so businesses must check the requirements of each applicable local jurisdiction.

Can I verify an Anchorage business license online?

Anchorage provides an official CDR Online Lookup that includes a business-license search using a license number, applicant name or address. Confirm that the result corresponds to the correct business and license category.

Do restaurants need permits beyond an Alaska Business License?

Usually, yes. Covered food establishments are subject to food-safety permitting and inspection requirements administered by Alaska DEC outside Anchorage or by Anchorage’s local food-safety program within the Municipality of Anchorage. Building, zoning and other approvals may also apply.

What happens if an Alaska Business License has been expired for more than two years?

The Business Licensing office states that a license expired for more than two years cannot simply be renewed; a new business license must be purchased.

Does finding a business license prove the company is reputable?

No. The state’s search disclaimer says the department does not verify all information supplied for the business license and that holding a license does not guarantee service quality. Check any professional license, complaint information or other records relevant to your decision.

Does CountyPermitSearch.org issue Alaska business permits?

No. CountyPermitSearch.org is an independent informational website. It does not issue Alaska licenses, approve business applications, collect government fees or operate state or municipal licensing databases.

Official Alaska Business License and Permit Resources

Use the government resource that matches the license or permit you actually need. State business licensing, professional licensing, local business registration and industry permits are separate systems.

Best way to verify a business

For a normal business, check the Alaska Business License record first. Then determine whether the activity requires a professional or industry license and whether the physical location is subject to municipal licensing, tax registration, zoning or operating permits.

An empty result in one database does not prove that the business is unlicensed. Confirm that you searched the correct agency, business name and jurisdiction before drawing a conclusion.

11 / Next step

What to Do After Your Alaska Business Permit Lookup

If you are checking an existing business, save the state license number and expiration information, then verify any professional or industry license that applies. If the business operates from a regulated physical location, check the appropriate municipal licensing, zoning and permit records as well.

If you are opening a business, identify your legal entity, professional requirements and state business-license obligations before assuming the general business license completes the process. Then contact the local government responsible for your physical location and check the permits tied to your actual activity.

Permit rules, licensing fees and municipal procedures can change. Use the official government links above for consequential filing or compliance decisions.
